Religion in AlbaniaReligious beliefs in Albania are not simple at all. The population of Albania divided up into three major religions.
These percentages are estimates, there are no scalable current statistics on affiliation.
In 1967 all mosques and churches were closed down and religious observances were prohibited (Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania). This was caused by the country becoming under communist rule in 1945. In 1967 Albania declared its self a atheist state and all forms of religious practice were banned. All churches, monasteries and worshiping places were destroyed (Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania). Out of four-hundred and forty priests who served before communism, only an estimated twenty-two survived this devastating hardship. Albania took a sharp turn in 1991 when the Albanian Orthodox rose from its ruins. Since then, churches, youth groups, women's groups and many more have been established (Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania). At first the religion in Albania was tearing it apart, but by the time it was able to get re-established it was much more unifying. There is definitely religious tolerance in Albania (Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania). |
